Safe and diverse neighborhoods, excellent schools and world-class universities, arts organizations, and sports teams—what’s not to like about Pittsburgh?

Overview

Pittsburgh recently was ranked the No. 1 U.S. city for relocating families by Worldwide ERC and Primacy Relocation.

Pittsburgh’s housing market was spared the boom and bust that hit many other U.S. cities, and it remains healthy, thanks to the city’s high quality of life and relatively strong job market—built largely on the “Eds and Meds” strengths of Pitt and UPMC.

Plenty of rental housing also is available within walking distance—or a short drive or bus ride—of Pitt and UPMC facilities.

With three rivers, more bridges than any other city in the world (yes, including Venice), safe and diverse neighborhoods, affordable housing, an astonishing 7.8 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents, and first-rate schools, universities, arts organizations, and sports teams—post-industrial Pittsburgh thrives.

Not to brag, but…

  • As a result of emerging technology and innovation industries, academia and healthcare, low unemployment, affordable housing and an active cultural scene Money Magazine named Pittsburgh one of its 2015 top five best large cities in the United States and the top city in the Northeast to live in.
  • On August 27, 2015 the Pittsburgh Post Gazette published, How much money do families need to live modestly in Pittsburgh? See how the costs of living compares to live modestly in Pittsburgh as it does to live in Sacramento, Calif., and Austin, Texas.
  • In July, 2015 the NY Times called Pittsburgh a canvas for the kind of urban dreams that more crowded and expensive cities can’t foster.   A city where abandoned buildings reveal art museums in the making, where decaying industrial sites prove ripe for urban exploration, and where residential streets hide kitchens turning out remarkably fresh, local food.

  • In 2010, Forbes.com named Pittsburgh the country’s Most Livable City, based on employment opportunities, safety, affordability, and arts and leisure offerings.
  • Also in 2010, Forbes.com ranked Pittsburgh seventh nationally on its list of the best places to raise a family. And Forbes magazine ranked Pittsburgh the best place to buy a home.
  • In 2009, Britain’s The Economist rated Pittsburgh the No. 1 most livable city in the United States and 29th worldwide.
  • That same year, ForbesTraveler.com ranked Pittsburgh’s skyline among the world’s most stunning, and Moody’s Investors Service rated the seven-county Pittsburgh region as the country’s No. 1 commercial real estate market.
